Over the course of my journey to being Mummy the Fibro Warrior, I have tried many things to manage my chronic condition. I have used many treatments, tablets and tips to try and help the pain I experience. These range from acupuncture, Naproxen, tens machines, physiotherapy to reflexology. I am constantly searching for the perfect treatment for fibromyalgia.
However, for those of you who have fibromyalgia or know someone who does, we know that unfortunately none of these ‘solutions’ offer a long term fix.
Treatment for fibromyalgia: Things I do to manage
I am in no way medically trained to talk about specific medications that could help with your chronic illness. However I have decided to compile a list of the non medicinal options I use to help with my fibromyalgia. This list is not exclusive and does not mean my pain is completely eradicated but there are a few things I do on a regular basis that help me continue to be Mummy the Fibro Warrior.
Hot water bottle
I adore my hot water bottle, no matter the weather! It is great for my lower back pain and it is like an act of self care when I treat myself to it. I actually cannot sleep without it. My husband is also super supportive and regularly tops it up for me!
p.s. If you don’t have a hot water bottle, why not pick one up from Amazon today? If you use my affiliate link, at no extra cost to you, I will receive a small amount of commission.
Hot baths
The joy of a hot bath after a long day is next to none! It means I get to lie down, the heat helps my back, legs and feet and more importantly it is alone time where I can rest and recharge a little, especially as I find pacing myself hard.
Socialising and getting out
I touched on this topic in an earlier blog post when I spoke about learning to be okay with staying home. I have finally began to see the importance of this! Socialising and getting out though is something I enjoy and really helps me manage my condition. I am very fortunate in that I have fantastic, supportive friends, family and an amazing husband, who without I would not be the fibro warrior I am today. I love meeting up with friends and sharing parental anecdotes, funny stories or a good old gossip. It takes me out of the pain for a while and puts a smile on my face. Family days out are just the best too and you cannot beat the power of a good hug!
A nice date night/ afternoon/ morning with your partner is also just what the doctor ordered. We were lucky that my little boy went to his Auntie and Uncle’s house, for a few hours this week, whilst Mummy and Daddy went to the cinema to see the new Indiana Jones movie (I would very much recommend going to see by the way) and it truly reignited our spark!
I do understand that I am very fortunate that I can get out the house and socialise, so I don’t want you to feel like a failure if you can’t leave the house. Remember, there are other ways of socialising now in the 21st century. We have text, Whatsapp, Facebook and Facebook groups, Facebook Messenger, Skype and the list goes on. Find your support network virtually if you cannot go out.
Laughter
One of the most important things for me is laughter. It truly is the best medicine! Seeing my little boy giggling his head off at the park brightens up any flare day. Watching a comedy show with my husband, snuggled on the sofa when my boy is in bed, helps wash away the pain and sharing a funny moment with friends makes the aches and pains more bearable.
Mummy the Fibro Warrior Top Tip
- My top tip for today is find what techniques, treatments and tools work for you and make it your own. Perhaps you enjoy walking, listening to music or love nothing more than a good book or podcast to forget your troubles. Whatever it is, make time for it daily.
If there is one takeaway I would like you all to remember today is that you can manage your condition! It is hard but try not to let it control you and get you down. I need you to know, you are doing the best you can, your child/children love you just as you are and you are Mummy the Fibro Warrior.
Until next time
